Türkiye Escalates Crackdown on LGBTQ+ Activists and Organizations

The operation, branded “My Family Is Safe” by Justice Minister Akın Gürlek, has targeted 162 individuals alongside 13 businesses and nine organizations. Authorities have simultaneously blocked access to over 180 websites and social media accounts, including the Turkish branch of Amnesty International, in an effort to stifle digital advocacy. Demonstrators gathered outside the Çağlayan Courthouse in Istanbul this week to protest the arrests, which critics describe as a calculated attempt to scapegoat the community for broader social anxieties.

The Weaponization of Family Rhetoric

Human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch and the UN’s Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, argue that the state is manipulating the criminal justice system to conflate legitimate advocacy with offenses like obscenity and drug use. While Turkish law technically allows for homosexuality, the Justice and Development Party (AKP) has moved toward systematic repression, often utilizing anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric to consolidate political support during election cycles. As the government weighs further legislative proposals that could outright criminalize LGBTQ+ identity, local women’s coalitions and international officials warn that this state-led pressure threatens the fundamental rule of law and civil expression for all citizens.
