Mahmoud Khalil Released After 104 Days in ICE Detention

Khalil, who was taken into custody near his New York City home in March, remains defiant following his release. He dismissed the government’s claims that he posed a threat, stating, "They chose the wrong person for this." His detention stemmed from his role in campus protests demanding Columbia divest from interests linked to the war in Gaza, a conflict that has claimed over 55,000 Palestinian lives.

Legal battles over his status continue to polarize the judicial branch. While U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz ordered his release, declaring him "not a danger to the community," the administration remains committed to his deportation. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin labeled the release an example of a "rogue" judiciary undermining national security, noting that an immigration judge simultaneously denied Khalil asylum and bond. Khalil, meanwhile, expressed his primary relief at finally reuniting with his wife, Dr. Noor Abdalla, and their infant son, while pledging to advocate for the hundreds of detainees left behind in the facility.
