Copper CEO Departs Amid Stalled $500 Million Sale Effort

Kuchinad’s departure comes just four months into a sale process managed by Cantor Fitzgerald. The firm has struggled to bridge the gap between its desired price and the market reality, with current offers trailing nearly 90% below the peak valuations the business commanded during the 2021 crypto bull market. While Copper seeks an exit, no public sale agreement has been reached, and the company has remained silent on the specific reasons for the executive change or the current status of its negotiations.

Leadership instability coincides with a broader shift in the institutional custody landscape. While Copper attempts to offload its assets, major financial players and crypto-native firms like BitGo, Fireblocks, and Coinbase are consolidating their positions. Newer entrants, bolstered by recent regulatory approvals from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, are intensifying the competition for institutional clients. Against this backdrop, Copper has bolstered its internal ranks by naming Elin Cherry as chief compliance officer and Sean Bowen as chief operating officer, though the firm has yet to appoint an interim successor to steer the company through its ongoing sale process.
