Kennedy Center Board Defies Court Order to Restore Trump Name

The board’s decision involves placing a plaque reading "Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump" beneath the building’s main signage. This follows a ruling six months ago by US District Judge Christopher Cooper, who declared that the board lacked the legal authority to rename the historic venue without explicit congressional approval. The previous attempt to rebrand the facility as the "Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts" was struck down in that same legal action.

Representative Joyce Beatty, an ex-officio board member who spearheaded the initial lawsuit, condemned the vote as a transparent attempt to circumvent judicial authority. Norm Eisen, co-founder of Democracy Defenders Action and former co-counsel in the litigation, signaled that the board will face renewed legal consequences for the defiance. Meanwhile, Representative Ted Lieu suggested the incident underscores a broader need to purge federal institutions of such branding, while political analysts noted the move risks further alienating voters concerned with substantive national issues.
