Investor Reclaims $4.5M in Bitcoin After 12-Year Exchange Collapse

The investor, known as Chris, purchased the bitcoin in December 2011 for roughly £1,500 while the cryptocurrency traded below $4. When the platform shuttered its operations—first rebranding from Britcoin to Intersango before disappearing from the internet by 2014—he believed his holdings were permanently lost. For over twelve years, the assets remained trapped in a custodial limbo, inaccessible to their owner.

CEL Solicitors, the firm handling the case, executed the recovery over four months without law enforcement intervention. By pairing blockchain tracing technology with legacy documents—including bank statements and email correspondence dating back nearly 15 years—the firm established ownership of the specific balance. This process highlights a critical distinction in the cryptocurrency sector: while blockchain ledgers provide an immutable record of transactions, they do not inherently link addresses to legal identities. Success required bridging the gap between on-chain activity and off-chain proof of purchase.

Following this success, the firm announced it has identified a wallet containing more than 5,500 bitcoin, potentially linked to other former Intersango users. However, legal experts caution that this does not constitute a guaranteed recovery pool. Any future claims will depend on the availability of archaic financial records and the ability to verify individual ownership against a platform that lacked modern regulatory oversight. For now, the case remains an isolated success, serving as a reminder of the fragility of early custodial arrangements.
