US School Meal Access Threatened by Massive SNAP Funding Cuts

The 2025 budget law has pushed SNAP enrollment to a 17-year low, stripping aid from five million people, including 1.5 million children. Because school districts rely on SNAP participation rolls to certify students for free breakfast and lunch, the reduction in federal assistance forces many families into a complex, bureaucratic application process. This administrative hurdle threatens to leave millions of vulnerable students without consistent access to daily nutrition.

Clarissa Hayes of the Food Research & Action Center warns that the impact extends far beyond the grocery store, creating a negative cycle that degrades both student health and academic performance. The crisis is compounded by the threat to the Community Eligibility Provision, which allows schools to provide universal meals. As direct certification numbers drop, schools risk losing the federal reimbursements necessary to sustain these programs. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi has urged the Department of Agriculture to intervene, arguing that no child should lose access to lunch because of shifting federal requirements.
