Banco do Brasil Joins Blockchain Finance With $5M Citi Note Deal

The investment, conducted through Banco do Brasil’s proprietary treasury, signals a significant step in the bank's efforts to evaluate distributed ledger technology for institutional asset management. Unlike tokenized assets that merely mirror traditional securities, this note was created directly on the blockchain, eliminating the need for the fragmented, multi-system processing typically required for conventional financial instruments.

Citigroup Global Markets Funding Luxembourg SCA issued the note, while the bank's London branch managed issuance and payment duties. By leveraging Euroclear’s D-FMI platform, the parties achieved a more integrated workflow, reducing operational touchpoints and enhancing transaction transparency. Francisco Lassalvia, vice president of wholesale banking at Banco do Brasil, noted that the move is part of a broader strategy to support the long-term digitalization of global financial markets.

For Citi, the project aligns with its ongoing initiatives to accelerate digital capital market growth. Roksolana Dushynska, a manager in Citi’s global markets equity structuring division, emphasized that the technology is being deployed to improve settlement efficiency and accessibility. While financial institutions remain in the experimental phase, this transaction demonstrates a shift toward using blockchain as the primary infrastructure for the entire lifecycle of an investment product, from initial issuance to final reconciliation.
