US Teachers at Breaking Point Over Costs and Classroom Funding

Most educators polled by Grow Progress anticipate spending between $100 and $600 of their own money on essential supplies this year. Beyond paper and pencils, nearly a third of respondents are purchasing food and hygiene products for students, while others cover the costs of specialized accessibility tools. AFT president Randi Weingarten described the situation as unsustainable, noting that many educators are forced to take second jobs just to make ends meet.

Economic data underscores the strain. A recent report from the Center for Economic and Policy Research found that teachers face a 25.2% pay penalty compared to other college graduates. This wage gap, coupled with rising fuel costs and the broader affordability crisis, has pushed 62% of surveyed teachers to report high stress levels. Nearly a third of those polled are now considering leaving the profession entirely within the next year.

The Economic and Political Toll

Beyond individual finances, teachers report deep concerns regarding the current administration’s policies. Over three-quarters of respondents cited negative impacts from federal funding cuts, immigration enforcement, and political pressure surrounding classroom content. Economists like Sylvia Allegretto argue that these systemic failures are particularly stark in a wealthy nation, where the long-term devaluation of public education continues to erode the quality of schools. With midterm elections approaching, the debate over who bears responsibility for these costs has intensified, as families and educators alike navigate record-high prices for basic necessities.
