UN Report Signals 1.5°C Goal Now Beyond Reach

The report, titled Limiting Overshoot and published by the UN Environment Program, charts a narrow path to recovery. Experts now estimate a best-case peak temperature of 1.8°C, provided humanity adopts an aggressive "overshoot, peak, and decline" strategy. Failure to reduce emissions by 55% by 2035 would significantly worsen the frequency of heatwaves, glacial collapses, and flooding already observed across the globe.

The Path to Mitigation

UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen warned that every five-year delay in climate action pushes the peak temperature higher by at least a tenth of a degree. While the document identifies carbon dioxide removal as a necessary tool, researchers caution against viewing such technologies as a panacea. Scientists emphasize that relying on unproven fixes cannot substitute for the total phase-out of coal, oil, and gas. As policymakers prepare for upcoming climate summits, the focus remains on whether governments will prioritize immediate decarbonization over the continued expansion of fossil fuel industries. With global temperatures already hovering 1.3°C to 1.4°C above preindustrial averages, the window to limit the duration of this overshoot is closing rapidly.
