IRS Tax Enforcement Faces Funding Cliff Amid GOP Push for Cuts

The Inflation Reduction Act, passed in 2022, provided an $80 billion lifeline to an agency previously hollowed out by years of austerity. During that period of budget constraints, audit rates for millionaires plummeted by more than 70%, while scrutiny of large corporations dropped by half. Recent enforcement efforts have already begun to yield results, with the IRS reporting the collection of over $500 million from wealthy dodgers since the legislation took effect.

Despite these gains, the agency's future remains a target of political friction. While the White House argues that maintaining these investments could secure as much as $851 billion in revenue through 2034, the fiscal outlook remains precarious. A debt ceiling agreement last year already forced a $20 billion rescission from the initial funding boost. House Speaker Mike Johnson has signaled an intent to pursue further reductions, a move that analysts warn would cost the federal government at least $100 billion in lost revenue over the next ten years. Lael Brainard, director of the White House National Economic Council, characterized the Republican push as a choice to prioritize tax evasion by the wealthy over deficit reduction.
