The Swiss Bankers Association’s annual Banking Barometer reveals a sector buoyed by commission business and services, which climbed 6.5 percent. While ordinary income saw a robust gain of 26.6 percent, the industry remains tethered to margin pressure, as interest income dipped 0.8 percent despite an uptick in lending. This performance reflects a broader regional strength, with Liechtenstein-based institutions like LGT reporting group profit increases of 25 percent.
However, the workforce landscape tells a different story. Full-time equivalent roles dropped 2.5 percent to 92,002 by the end of 2025, primarily driven by reductions at large banks. Looking ahead, the Swiss Banking Outlook survey suggests a cautious optimism; while no respondents predict a decline in net income for 2026, the sector continues to navigate friction between Berne and Zurich regarding capital requirements. As Switzerland cedes its title as the world’s largest cross-border financial hub to Hong Kong, the focus has shifted toward maintaining efficiency amidst ongoing regulatory scrutiny.
