FBI and Australian Police Charge Two in Global Software Supply-Chain Probe

The Australian Federal Police, alongside the FBI and Western Australia Police Force, executed raids across Cottesloe, Hamilton Hill, and Mandurah to dismantle the operation. Ruben Ian Thomson, 21, and Louis Michael Gaebler, 23, appeared before the Perth Magistrates Court on August 27. While Australian authorities lead the domestic case, U.S. prosecutors have simultaneously unsealed a federal indictment against Thomson, alleging he used stolen data to launch extortion campaigns.

Investigators suggest the syndicate exploited the trust inherent in software supply chains. By inserting malicious code into legitimate components, the group gained unauthorized access to government, academic, and private sector systems globally. Officials estimate that remediation efforts for affected organizations could reach hundreds of millions of dollars. While the investigation remains ongoing, police are currently analyzing seized electronic devices and tracking cryptocurrency payments linked to the defendants. Thomson faces a potential 20-year sentence in Australia for dealing with criminal proceeds, alongside separate federal charges in the United States.
