Progressives Sound Alarm Over Detention of Columbia Graduate Mahmoud Khalil

Khalil was apprehended Saturday evening while returning to his university-owned apartment with his pregnant wife. He is currently held at a facility in Central Louisiana, more than a thousand miles from his home, under a new State Department policy targeting students labeled as pro-Hamas. The detention comes after Khalil, an Algerian citizen of Palestinian descent, helped organize last year’s solidarity encampment at Columbia to protest the war in Gaza.

Legal advocates and lawmakers are framing the arrest as a direct assault on the First Amendment. In the hours following his removal, his wife struggled to locate him, only to be misdirected to a facility in New Jersey. Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats have joined the outcry, characterizing the move as a testing ground for broader crackdowns on political opposition. Prior to his arrest, Khalil had alerted Columbia administrators to a coordinated doxxing campaign against him, urging the university to provide protection as he feared for his safety.

While hundreds gathered in New York City to protest his detention, Columbia University officials have maintained a guarded stance, stating only that they follow the law. Critics, including New York City Council member Chi Ossé, argue that the silence from institutional leadership facilitates an environment where constitutional rights can be systematically eroded.
