US Households Face $3,800 Surge in Living Costs Under Trump

Grocery prices in July sat more than 4% higher than when the administration took office in January 2025, with families spending an extra $310 on food last year alone. Energy costs have likewise spiked, driven by the ongoing conflict in Iran; since hostilities began in late February, households have shelled out an additional $604 on gasoline. Democratic lawmakers point to these figures as evidence that the administration has failed to honor campaign promises to curb inflation.

Senator Maggie Hassan, ranking member of the JEC, blamed the rising costs on a series of misguided executive actions and legislative choices. The committee report specifically cites the refusal to extend enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies, which has caused insurance premiums to climb sharply. The Unrig Our Economy coalition echoed these concerns, arguing that the administration’s focus on tariffs and military engagement has prioritized tax breaks for billionaires at the expense of working-class stability.
