Swiss Town Buried After Massive Glacier Collapse

The collapse of the Birch Glacier on Wednesday obliterated roughly 90% of the village, turning the mountainside settlement into a landscape of rubble. Blatten Mayor Matthias Bellwald confirmed the devastation, stating that while the village is lost, plans to rebuild are already underway.

Mathieu Morlighem, a glaciologist at Dartmouth College, identified the destabilization of permafrost beneath and surrounding the glacier as the primary driver of the event. He noted that such collapses are an expected consequence of rising temperatures in the Alps. Swiss glaciers have lost nearly 40% of their volume since 2000, with acceleration observed during record-breaking heat in 2022 and 2023. Scientists warn that without a reversal in warming trends, these glacial structures could vanish entirely by the end of the century, threatening water security for millions.
