Grocery Costs Emerge as Top Financial Stressor for Americans

The Associated Press poll underscores a deepening divide in economic security. While the pressure is most acute for households earning $30,000 or less annually—with nearly two-thirds labeling food costs a major burden—the unease is spreading. Even among higher-income brackets exceeding $100,000, 40% of respondents cite grocery inflation as a significant stressor. To bridge the gap, three in ten Americans have turned to "buy now, pay later" financing for essential purchases, a trend that consumer watchdogs warn often leads to dangerous levels of personal debt due to minimal federal oversight.

Small businesses are simultaneously reaching a breaking point as their ability to shield consumers from rising costs evaporates. Melanie Abrantes, a business owner in Oakland, California, confirmed she will likely be forced to hike prices before the year ends, bluntly predicting that import duties will make goods significantly more expensive. Economists at Wells Fargo support this outlook, noting that retailers have exhausted their ability to absorb tariff costs. As pre-tariff stockpiles dwindle, the firm expects core goods prices to accelerate throughout the second half of the year.
