Democratic Primary Voters Demand End to Military Aid for Israel

The survey, conducted by the Institute for Middle East Understanding (IMEU) Policy Project and YouGov, polled 4,000 likely Democratic primary voters in South Carolina, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Michigan, and Virginia. The findings challenge the narrative that an arms embargo is an extreme position, showing instead that it is a central concern for the party’s electorate.

Even in states like South Carolina and Virginia, often viewed as moderate strongholds, nearly two-thirds of voters support cutting off military aid to Israel. The sentiment is even more pronounced in other early states; 74% of Nevada voters and 75% of voters in New Hampshire, Michigan, and New Mexico favor ending weapons shipments. Furthermore, in Michigan, 80% of respondents characterized Israel's actions in Gaza as genocide.

This trend creates a significant hurdle for potential 2028 presidential contenders who have historically navigated the issue with caution. While candidates like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have committed to opposing military aid, others—including Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom, and Pete Buttigieg—have faced scrutiny for their shifting or non-committal stances. As these figures begin courting voters in early primary states, the polling suggests that the party's traditional pro-Israel consensus may be increasingly difficult to maintain.
