Pentagon Fires Stars and Stripes Leadership Over Editorial Independence

Editor-in-chief Erik Slavin and correspondent Lara Korte were dismissed after an earlier interview with CBS News, where they identified potential censorship of military news as a "red line." Both maintained that the publication, while under the Defense Department umbrella, is legally mandated to operate with editorial autonomy. Publisher Max Lederer was also removed from his post on Friday, shortly after announcing his own retirement due to irreconcilable differences with Pentagon leadership regarding the paper’s mission.

The administration has moved to replace Lederer with Capt. William Urban, a career public affairs officer with no professional journalism background. In a memo to staff, Urban acknowledged his history as a military spokesperson, framing his experience in media firestorms as a qualification for the role. Free speech advocates have condemned the firings as a dangerous shift toward propaganda, while Senators Richard Blumenthal and Elizabeth Warren warned that installing a military public relations officer to oversee independent news threatens the credibility of the publication for servicemembers worldwide.
