Summer Lee Rebukes Democratic Silence on Islamophobic Attacks

In a three-minute video address, Lee characterized the lack of pushback from Democrats as a moral failing, warning that unchecked hatred threatens the integrity of the party's coalition. Her comments followed a contentious week on Capitol Hill, where Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) accused Tlaib of advocating for terrorists during a debate on a failed war powers resolution regarding Lebanon. Rep. Brian Mast (R-Fla.) further stoked tensions by labeling supporters of the measure as proxies for Hezbollah.

Lee argued that these attacks are rooted in bigotry rather than policy disagreement. She noted that the rhetoric mirrors smear campaigns against Dr. Adam Hamawy, a retired Army surgeon who recently won a New Jersey congressional primary. Despite his service—which includes saving the life of Sen. Tammy Duckworth—Hamawy faced intense scrutiny over past community associations, a narrative amplified by both political opponents and mainstream media outlets like The New York Times. Lee emphasized that the Democratic Party must act as a standard-setter for justice, arguing that failing to confront these tropes undermines the party's commitment to equality and liberation.
