California Voters Turn Toward Progressives Over Mainstream Democrats

The data reflects a broader national trend where voters are challenging institutional party structures. Among self-identified Democrats in California, 60% expressed an inclination to vote for a progressive, and 58% for a democratic socialist. In contrast, only 48% favored a candidate branding themselves as a mainstream Democrat. Sen. Bernie Sanders, a long-time advocate for systemic economic change, argues this shift stems from record-high wealth inequality and a public exhausted by status quo policies that have failed to address the needs of working families.

This ideological tug-of-war is playing out on the ground in several high-stakes contests. In California’s 14th District, state Sen. Aisha Wahab is locked in a tight race against Melissa Hernandez for a seat previously held by Eric Swalwell. Despite a significant primary lead, Wahab faced a $6.3 million spending blitz from AIPAC, leaving the contest too close to call as of Thursday. Similarly, in the 7th district, Sacramento City Council member Mai Vang has mounted an unexpected challenge against 11-term incumbent Doris Matsui by championing policies like Medicare for All and the abolition of ICE. These races, alongside the Los Angeles mayoral contest between Karen Bass and Nithya Raman, serve as critical barometers for the party's future direction.
