GOP pivots on AI data centers as election backlash mounts

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has identified data centers as a critical sleeper issue for the November midterms. Rather than pushing for outright construction moratoriums, candidates are pivoting toward calls for 'guardrails' and the potential rollback of industry tax breaks. This tactical shift seeks to neutralize grassroots opposition while attempting to frame Democratic rivals as less committed to local interests.

In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has moved to audit tech companies' grid usage and vowed to revisit tax incentives, despite accepting significant campaign contributions from industry executives. Similarly, in Wisconsin, Republican nominee Tom Tiffany is attempting to cast his opponent, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, as an industry ally. Critics, however, dismiss these maneuvers as superficial. Charlie Blaettler of the Guardrails Alliance argued that the party is merely reacting to the public’s rejection of Big AI’s agenda. He contends that these candidates, having previously enabled the industry’s rapid growth, are now attempting to obscure their records to secure electoral support.
