HTX Denies Role in Kraken Compliance Freezes

The controversy centers on small, unexplained USDT transfers sent from addresses tagged as HTX-linked to various Kraken accounts. Following these transactions, some Kraken users reported restricted access to their funds, prompting speculation that the transfers were a deliberate attempt to trigger automated sanctions-screening systems. An HTX representative, posting under the account @HTX_Molly, stated the exchange found no evidence of activity from its official accounts and suggested the transfers might be independent protests by users.

Regulatory friction and the $4.2 million claim

Kraken’s enforcement actions are rooted in U.K. sanctions policy. The British government designated Huobi Global S.A. under its Russia sanctions regime in May, and the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation has confirmed that this designation extends to the HTX exchange through ownership rules. Kraken confirmed it restricts funds transferred from entities tied to the designation, though it has not publicly linked specific account freezes to the recent microtransfers.

HTX representatives claimed that Kraken-linked restrictions have reached a total of $4.2 million, yet the exchange has not provided transaction hashes, account records, or supporting communications from Kraken to verify the figure. Kraken has not confirmed this amount, nor has it detailed how it evaluates unsolicited incoming transfers. As of now, the link between the microtransfers and the account locks remains anecdotal, with no independent onchain data confirming a coordinated campaign or the total value of affected assets.
