Core Scientific’s $24B AI pivot meets the reality of heavy debt

Core Scientific’s $24B AI pivot meets the reality of heavy debt

The company’s second-quarter results highlight a stark shift in business priorities. Colocation revenue surged to $136.7 million, dwarfing the $21.5 million generated by self-mining, which recorded a gross loss during the period. By leveraging energized sites once dedicated to crypto-mining, Core Scientific has positioned itself as a critical landlord for high-performance computing, signing major agreements with players like CoreWeave and AMD. While these contracts promise billions in future revenue, they remain projections spanning up to 15 years rather than guaranteed cash.

Execution remains the primary hurdle. To meet its ambitious deployment schedule, the company poured $954.2 million into capital expenditures during the first half of 2026 alone. This rapid expansion necessitated a massive influx of external financing, pushing long-term debt to approximately $4.3 billion. While the firm currently holds $1.8 billion in liquidity, it must navigate the complex demands of grid development and facility construction while ensuring its primary customers maintain their payment obligations. The transition marks a fundamental change in risk profile: the firm has moved away from the volatility of Bitcoin prices and toward the long-term industrial pressures of infrastructure delivery and debt management.
