Arthur Hayes unveils 10-year FLOP token distribution plan

The proposed network, Flop Network, intends to connect AI agents with hardware providers who process inference requests. Unlike existing cloud services that obscure pricing through proprietary input and output tokens, Hayes envisions a system priced by floating-point operations. By utilizing a 'Proof of Useful Inference' mechanism, miners would earn FLOP tokens both as block rewards and as direct fees for the computational tasks performed.

Despite the ambitious scope, the project remains in its early stages. Hayes confirmed that he has self-funded the development team to avoid a venture-backed presale, aiming for a fair-start model. However, critical technical details—including the mechanism for verifying nondeterministic AI outputs, the specific blockchain architecture, and the hardware requirements for miners—have yet to be disclosed. The roadmap currently targets a token airdrop in late 2026, followed by a genesis block in early 2027.

The project enters a competitive landscape already dominated by stablecoin-based payments. Data from Keyrock indicates that USDC currently facilitates the vast majority of AI agent settlements due to low transaction costs. While Hayes argues that a native token tied to computing capacity provides a superior 'food for AI' model, the network must still resolve how miners will reconcile the volatility of a traded token against real-world electricity and hardware costs.
