Binance Claims Intervention in $1.2M DAO Governance Attack

Binance Claims Intervention in $1.2M DAO Governance Attack

The attack targeted a weakness in the project’s on-chain governance mechanism, where low proposal thresholds allegedly allowed an actor to bypass protocol requirements. While Binance did not disclose the specific project or the technical nature of the exploit, the exchange stated that it contacted the DAO and other centralized platforms to restrict potential exit routes for the stolen funds. By closing deposits, the exchanges aimed to prevent the attacker from laundering or liquidating the tokens had the proposal successfully executed.

The project ultimately voted down the malicious proposal, preventing any loss of funds. Binance Chief Security Officer Jimmy Su asserted that the threat had gone unnoticed by external security providers, though these details remain unverified. Because Binance has withheld the project’s name, the proposal identifier, and on-chain transaction records, the $1.2 million figure serves as the company’s internal estimate rather than a confirmed loss. The incident highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in decentralized governance, where low voter participation or insufficient timelocks often leave treasury assets exposed to manipulation.
