Eight Million Americans Lose Healthcare Under GOP Budget Cuts

The advocacy group Protect Our Care released state-by-state reports detailing the fallout from nearly $900 billion in Medicaid cuts and the expiration of enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies. Brad Woodhouse, president of the organization, stated that the policy shift forces families into impossible choices between basic necessities and medical coverage, while seniors are increasingly rationing vital medication.

In Maine, over 18,700 residents have lost coverage, with 7,500 individuals dropping marketplace plans as premiums surged. Local hospitals face a $38 million funding shortfall and a 6.7% increase in uncompensated care, leaving 20 healthcare providers at risk of closure or service reductions. Alaska reports similar distress, with 25,600 residents losing coverage and average premiums climbing by 346% this year. These findings cast a spotlight on vulnerable lawmakers like Sen. Susan Collins, who advanced the budget legislation, and Sen. Dan Sullivan, who voted in favor of the cuts, as both face intense scrutiny ahead of the November elections.
