Vitalik Buterin outlines hybrid scaling path for Ethereum

The vision revolves around optimizing how Ethereum handles transaction state. Researcher Toni Wahrstätter recently proposed introducing native UTXO-like payments to Ethereum, a move that could theoretically slash payment state usage by approximately 99.8%. By treating one-shot payments as temporary objects verified against history rather than permanent smart-contract entries, the network could significantly reduce the data overhead that currently forces nodes to manage massive storage requirements.

This initiative does not signal a total abandonment of Ethereum’s current architecture. Instead, Buterin describes a hybrid environment where different activities utilize the most efficient state models available. To support this, researchers are exploring EIP-8141, known as Frame Transactions, which would provide the necessary infrastructure for this UTXO-style execution. While this remains a research-led direction rather than a committed roadmap feature, it aligns with broader efforts to integrate recursive STARKs to minimize proof bandwidth. As the community looks toward the 2027 Hegotá upgrade, these designs remain under active scrutiny, serving as a blueprint for future network efficiency rather than immediate protocol changes.
