Africa Finance Corporation Issues Landmark $431 Million Digital Bond

The five-year bond, priced with a 1.4925% coupon, signals a strategic pivot toward digital capital markets for the multilateral lender. Commerzbank and Deutsche Bank facilitated the transaction, which saw robust participation from Swiss investors, who accounted for 90% of the total demand. Banks and financial institutions dominated the order book, followed by asset managers and hedge funds.

Unlike decentralized crypto-assets, this issuance operates within the established regulatory framework of the SIX Swiss Exchange and the SIX Digital Exchange. Ownership details are managed on a digital register, ensuring that the tokenized security remains fully compliant with traditional market infrastructure. Banji Fehintola, an executive at AFC, described the move as a commitment to innovation aimed at diversifying the firm's funding base to support infrastructure projects across Africa. The corporation maintains strong credit ratings, holding an A status from S&P Global and an A3 rating from Moody's, which bolstered investor confidence in this digital debut.
