Bithumb Posts $15.7M Quarterly Loss Amid Cooling Crypto Activity

The exchange’s revenue fell to 86.3 billion won, down from 134.4 billion won a year prior. Transaction commissions remain the primary engine for the company, accounting for nearly the entire revenue stream. As domestic trading volumes across South Korea contracted, the lack of diversified income left the platform vulnerable to the market downturn. While the firm maintained profitability at the operating level—posting 12.1 billion won—fluctuations in the value of its internal digital asset holdings ultimately pushed the net result into the red.

IPO Preparations and Regulatory Hurdles

These financial results coincide with Bithumb’s roadmap for a public listing targeted for 2028. The exchange is currently undergoing internal control improvements and preparing for Korean International Financial Reporting Standards. Despite the focus on long-term growth, the company faces ongoing regulatory scrutiny. Recent challenges include a 210 million won penalty from the Personal Information Protection Commission regarding data transfer procedures and a pending legal battle over a 36.8 billion won fine related to anti-money laundering compliance. As Bithumb works toward its IPO, it continues to refine its corporate structure, including the recent spinoff of its asset management unit, while navigating a market where its share of domestic trading volume has faced pressure from competitors like Upbit.
