Luigi Mangione Nears Plea Deal in UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder Case

Federal prosecutors initially pursued the death penalty against Mangione, but those stakes shifted in January when a federal judge dismissed the primary murder and firearms counts. The pending federal case now centers on stalking and related offenses. While a plea deal is currently in progress, legal experts note that the defendant retains the right to withdraw his agreement at any point during the court proceedings.

Beyond federal oversight, Mangione remains subject to state-level prosecution in New York, where he faces a charge of second-degree murder. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg previously attempted to classify the killing as an act of terrorism, a strategy that was rejected by a city judge who ruled the evidence did not meet the necessary threshold for that designation.
