Calls for Alito Recusal Mount Following Fossil Fuel Wealth Disclosure

The report by judicial watchdog Court Accountability highlights that Alito’s assets grew from roughly $1.1 million in 2005 to as much as $8.4 million by 2024. A substantial portion of this wealth is tied to mineral interests held by his wife, Martha-Ann Alito, in an Oklahoma property. Critics point to discrepancies in his financial disclosures, which appear to undervalue these holdings, as evidence of a lack of transparency.

With the Supreme Court set to hear Suncor Energy (USA) Inc. v. County Commissioners of Boulder County, watchdogs argue that Alito’s history of investing in over a dozen fossil fuel companies creates a clear conflict. While Alito does not currently hold shares in the companies involved in the case, his past realized gains from ExxonMobil and his pattern of rulings favoring the industry have fueled demands for a formal Senate investigation into his inconsistent recusal practices.
