Itaú Unibanco joins major Brazilian blockchain pilot for capital markets

Working alongside digital-asset firm OpenAssets, Itaú will evaluate the technical and compliance hurdles inherent in shifting traditional financial products to distributed-ledger networks. The initiative focuses on the full lifecycle of assets, including corporate debentures and investment funds, to determine how blockchain records can align with existing regulatory requirements for ownership and administration. By participating in this program, the bank aims to refine the standards necessary for moving tokenization from experimental proofs of concept into live, scalable market production.

This move reinforces Brazil’s position as a testing ground for institutional digital finance. Itaú previously contributed to the Central Bank of Brazil’s Drex digital currency project, gaining early experience with tokenized money. While the current pilot does not involve immediate public sales, it serves as a critical bridge between traditional banking infrastructure and decentralized technology. Other major institutions, including Bradesco, Santander Brasil, and BTG Pactual, are simultaneously exploring similar capabilities, reflecting a broader trend of banks seeking efficiency gains in capital market operations.
