Trump Threatens Tariffs Against Nations Resisting Greenland Annexation

While ostensibly discussing domestic policy, Trump explicitly linked his trade agenda to his Arctic ambitions, warning that he might impose duties on nations if they do not align with his national security goals regarding the Danish territory. The threat follows a week of mounting international tension, as troops from France, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United Kingdom arrived in the Arctic to signal solidarity with Denmark and Greenland.

Opposition within the U.S. Congress is intensifying, with critics labeling the proposed takeover a potential catastrophe for transatlantic stability. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) warned that the mere prospect of a U.S. invasion has left Danish and Greenlandic officials in a state of high alert, fearing a conflict that would dismantle NATO. Meanwhile, a bipartisan delegation in Copenhagen, led by Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.), sought to reassure allies, though only two Republicans—Senators Lisa Murkowski and Thom Tillis—joined the effort. Murkowski emphasized that the vast majority of Americans reject the acquisition, stating that Greenland must be treated as an ally rather than an asset. Internal Republican frustration is also rising, with anonymous lawmakers expressing alarm that the president’s rhetoric risks isolating the U.S. and destabilizing global security interests, including the defense of Ukraine.
