GOP Drops $1 Billion Ballroom Funding Amid Trump Pressure on Senate

The president turned to his Truth Social platform Wednesday to lash out at Elizabeth MacDonough, the official who oversees Senate rules, labeling her a partisan obstacle. Trump urged Republican leadership to remove her, framing the move as a necessary step to secure the passage of his legislative agenda and prevent future political losses. MacDonough, who has served in the role since 2012, has faced criticism from both sides of the aisle over the course of her tenure.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune maintained a cautious distance from the president’s rhetoric, noting that while any targeting of staff is concerning, the primary hurdle for the funding was a simple lack of support among GOP members. Following a lunch meeting, Senator John Kennedy confirmed the ballroom funding had been excised from the proposal entirely. The project, which has already involved the demolition of the White House East Wing and the historic Rose Garden, had drawn significant ire from 50 state legislators who formally requested that the funds be redirected toward national affordability concerns.
