Advocates Slam Trump Proposal to Overhaul Head Start Standards

Senator Bernie Sanders condemned the administration’s approach, calling it a cruel redirection at a time when the United States faces record rates of child poverty. Democratic lawmakers, including Senator Patty Murray and Representative Mike Levin, echoed these concerns, emphasizing that Head Start provides far more than basic preschool; it offers critical health screenings, disability support, and literacy foundations. While the administration has previously attempted to curtail funding and staffing for the program, opponents remain hopeful that public pressure can force a reversal, noting that the rule is not yet finalized.
