MARA Posts $611M Loss as Bitcoin Strategy Shifts Toward AI

The company’s treasury reserves have undergone a significant transformation. Bitcoin holdings dropped 29% over the past year, falling to 35,577 BTC as management shifted from an accumulation strategy to opportunistic sales. This liquidity is being redirected into an aggressive pivot toward AI infrastructure. Following the close of the quarter, MARA pledged an additional 18,750 BTC as collateral for credit facilities intended to fund the $1.5 billion acquisition of a 505-megawatt Ohio gas plant.

Operational metrics show a company caught between two worlds. Mining output climbed 3% to 2,422 BTC, yet profitability remained elusive due to rising energy costs and unfavorable fair-value accounting for digital assets. Chief Executive Fred Thiel maintains that digital infrastructure will eventually build upon the firm’s mining foundation. However, with shares closing down 5.25% following the report, investors remain focused on whether this capital-intensive expansion into high-performance computing can deliver the stability that mining economics currently lack.
