Bernie Sanders Proposes Federal Mandate for Paid Vacation

The bill, co-sponsored by Senators Chris Murphy, Ed Markey, Ruben Gallego, and Alex Padilla, would grant workers the right to accrue at least one hour of paid leave for every 25 hours worked. Beyond establishing a minimum leave threshold, the legislation includes provisions to protect employees from employer discrimination for exercising their right to time off. Representative Seth Magaziner has introduced a companion version of the bill in the House of Representatives, emphasizing that all workers deserve the opportunity to rest without the fear of lost wages.

This legislative push follows recent data from the Center for Economic and Policy Research, which revealed that nearly a quarter of the U.S. workforce receives no paid vacation time at all. This disparity is particularly acute among low-wage earners, with 57% of the bottom 10% of workers lacking any paid leave. Sanders argues that the status quo stands in direct opposition to American family values, noting that millions of citizens currently work longer hours for lower pay while remaining excluded from the benefits standard in most other developed economies.
