Mamdani Defends Progressive Agenda Against Speaker Johnson’s Attacks

Mamdani dismissed the Speaker’s rhetoric as a reaction to Abdul El-Sayed’s victory in Tuesday’s Michigan Democratic Senate primary. The mayor suggested that Johnson’s alarmism stems from a disconnect with the priorities of working-class Americans, specifically questioning why platforms focused on "Medicare for All" and removing money from politics are viewed as threats.

El-Sayed’s path to the nomination was marked by significant opposition, including $60 million in total outside spending against him, with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee contributing $30 million. Despite this financial pressure, El-Sayed secured the win by focusing on the cost-of-living crisis and healthcare accessibility. Following the Associated Press's confirmation of his victory, prominent establishment figures, including his primary opponent Representative Haley Stevens, have moved to support his candidacy.
