Bitcoin Onchain Activity Hits 2026 High Amid Coldcard Security Breach

K33 Research reports that nearly 890,000 BTC moved onchain over the past seven days, a volume not seen all year. This activity persists despite Bitcoin trading within an unusually tight price range, with realized volatility now trailing the Nasdaq 100. Analysts suggest the movement is a direct response to the Coldcard vulnerability, which allowed attackers to derive wallet seeds due to a flawed random number generator in the firmware.

Galaxy Research confirmed that at least 15 attackers have siphoned 1,596 BTC from approximately 7,300 addresses, with total losses potentially climbing to 2,055 BTC if further waves are verified. The breach has triggered a flight of capital, with major exchanges like OKX reporting record inflows as users abandon hardware wallets for centralized custody. Vetle Lunde, Head of Research at K33, noted that such spikes in onchain activity often precede major market pivots, as fear drives holders to move assets to exchanges for liquidation or safekeeping.

Technical investigations by Coinkite and Block confirmed that a deterministic MicroPython generator was mistakenly used in place of hardware-backed entropy, leaving thousands of devices vulnerable. While emergency firmware patches have been released, they do not secure existing wallets. Industry experts, including Kraken CSO Nick Percoco and Ripple’s David Schwartz, are now calling for more rigorous, third-party verification standards for hardware wallet firmware, noting that users currently lack any recovery mechanisms for these types of technical failures.
