Campaigners Press UN to Secure Trillions in Global Tax Treaty Talks

The framework, championed by African nations since 2022, seeks to wrest control of international tax standards from the OECD, shifting power toward a more inclusive global majority. However, organizations including Greenpeace International warn that the July drafts are riddled with loopholes. Critics point to the absence of a robust minimum tax on multinational profits and the dilution of rules targeting high-net-worth individuals as primary failures.

Greenpeace policy expert Nina Stros emphasized that the industry is currently reaping record profits, yet the proposed text lacks specific mechanisms to hold extractive sectors accountable for environmental costs. Meanwhile, Tax and Fiscal Justice Asia, representing over 50 groups across 13 countries, cautioned that the conference could devolve into empty rhetoric. They are urging delegates to prioritize a shift in taxing authority from corporate headquarters in wealthy states toward the regions where resources and labor are actually concentrated.
