Coinbase sets September 9 deadline for institutional Deribit migration

Coinbase sets September 9 deadline for institutional Deribit migration

Institutional clients face a hard deadline of August 28 to opt out of the migration. Those who remain must close existing margin loans and prepare for a 30-minute trading pause on the day of the transfer. While the company will handle the technical recreation of positions at identical prices, the process will cancel all open orders and settle profit and loss at the International Exchange mark price.

Technical hurdles persist for firms managing the transition. Existing API keys will be rendered obsolete, requiring institutions to integrate new Deribit-compatible endpoints and credentials. Furthermore, historical trading records will not carry over to the new platform; Coinbase intends to keep legacy APIs active for one year, urging firms to export necessary audit and tax data before the shutdown. While the migration itself carries no fees, the shift forces a fundamental change in how institutions manage their derivatives liquidity and custodial relationships across Coinbase’s diverse global entities, including those in Bermuda, Dubai, and Panama.
