Spain Shuts Airspace to US Military Flights Over Iran Conflict

The government’s refusal to support the operation—launched by the US and Israel on February 28—has already forced a logistical pivot for American forces. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed that all flight plans linked to the conflict, including refueling missions, have been rejected. This policy shift has effectively barred the Pentagon from utilizing the Rota and Morón de la Frontera bases for strike-related activities.

Washington’s response has been swift, with President Donald Trump threatening a full trade embargo against Spain. Despite the pressure, Spanish officials remain unmoved. Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo characterized the move as a principled stand against a war initiated unilaterally in violation of the United Nations Charter. While US planes retain access for emergency situations and general logistics, the operational impact is tangible: at least 15 refueling tankers were diverted to France and Germany early in the campaign, while heavy bombers were relocated to the United Kingdom’s Fairford Air Base.

Sánchez continues to frame the decision as a moral imperative, echoing Spain’s earlier move to recognize the state of Palestine. Though the administration faces intense scrutiny from Washington, the Prime Minister remains defiant, asserting that Spain’s role as an outlier serves as a necessary challenge to international aggression.
