The suite of tools includes a Quantum Risk Score, a remediation workflow for exposed addresses, a refined UTXO selection method, and updated default address settings. These features focus on the reality that spending from a Bitcoin address reveals its public key on-chain. If funds remain associated with that key via address reuse or partial spending, they become theoretically vulnerable to future quantum-based decryption. The new UTXO selection method proactively groups coins by address, attempting to consolidate assets during transactions to prevent leaving funds attached to exposed keys.

The remediation workflow facilitates the movement of assets to newly generated addresses that have not yet appeared on-chain. BitGo’s initiative arrives amid broader industry concern regarding long-duration quantum threats, particularly regarding Taproot outputs, which expose keys at creation rather than upon spending. Despite the technical focus, the company emphasizes that these controls are internal risk-management measures rather than a change to the Bitcoin protocol itself. Blockstream co-founder Adam Back noted that no existing quantum hardware can compromise Bitcoin, underscoring that these features prioritize operational hygiene over immediate security patches.

Data from Glassnode indicates that approximately 6.04 million BTC currently possess some form of public-key exposure, whether through structural design or operational habits like address reuse. While developers continue to debate protocol-level solutions such as the draft BIP 360 proposal, BitGo's tools provide a bridge for institutional clients to reduce their footprint today. The company has not yet disclosed specific pricing or the full scope of eligibility for these features, leaving the industry to balance current custody practices against the long-term evolution of post-quantum cryptography.
