Binance.US Pivots to Prediction Markets with CFTC License Bid

The proposed Designated Contract Market (DCM) license would empower the exchange to list futures, options, and event-based contracts under federal oversight. This strategy aligns with the firm’s broader recovery plan to diversify revenue streams after regulatory pressures eroded its once-significant 20% slice of the U.S. market. By broadening its product suite, Binance.US aims to compete with established platforms like Kalshi, Polymarket, and Gemini, as well as brokerage giants like Robinhood, which recently reported $156 million in quarterly revenue from event contracts.

Despite the push for federal authorization, the regulatory landscape remains fractured. A recent ruling by a federal judge in Wisconsin underscores the tension between federal commodities regulation and state-level gambling laws, as the court declined to block state enforcement against prediction platforms. This conflict is mirrored in the ongoing debate over the CFTC’s proposed Rule 40.11, which seeks to govern contracts tied to sensitive activities. With 44 state attorneys general urging the Commission to reconsider its authority and various professional sports leagues pushing for stricter integrity safeguards, Binance.US enters an increasingly complex and litigious corner of the financial sector.
