Visa Keeps Stablecoin Strategy Open as Open USD Launch Looms

During the company’s fiscal third-quarter earnings call on July 28, McInerney clarified that Visa’s objective is to facilitate secure connections for clients across various networks rather than crowning a market leader. This stance effectively decouples Visa’s technical involvement from an exclusive endorsement of Open USD, which is poised to compete with established giants like Tether’s USDT and Circle’s USDC.

Visa has already integrated support for Open USD into its newly launched Stablecoin Platform, which provides banks and fintechs with tools for minting, storage, and transfers. However, the company continues to process settlements for other tokens, reinforcing a strategy it describes as a multi-coin foundation. While Open Standard, the consortium behind the new token, promises a model where reserve revenue flows back to participants, the project has yet to launch or generate verified on-chain activity. Analysts suggest that the extensive list of corporate partners supporting the project may function more as a soft commitment than a definitive strategic pivot, leaving the ultimate success of Open USD dependent on actual market integration and regulatory compliance once it goes live later this year.
