American Arbitration Association Opens Specialized Web3 Dispute Panel

The New York-based organization is not creating a new regulatory body or court. Instead, the initiative embeds technical expertise into the existing AAA system, allowing parties to resolve commercial conflicts involving code-based agreements and cross-border digital activity. The panel focuses on disputes ranging from smart-contract bugs and wallet custody to DAO governance and agentic commerce, where artificial intelligence systems execute agreements with minimal human oversight.

Five initial members lead the roster, including Kabir Duggal of Akin Gump, David Evans, University of Pennsylvania professor David Hoffman, Paula Pendley of Nelson Mullins, and Rich Widmann of Google Cloud. Their combined expertise covers Bitcoin mining, AI infrastructure, and international arbitration. Despite the specialized focus, the process remains bound by standard procedures; parties must still provide a valid arbitration agreement to access these specialists. The AAA confirms that while these arbitrators can issue awards for damages or asset transfers, they lack the power to reverse immutable blockchain transactions directly.
