Violence and Settlement Expansion Surge in Occupied West Bank

Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office, described a landscape where movement restrictions block essential services while rhetoric from Israeli leaders threatens to transform the West Bank into another Gaza. According to the UN, settlers and security forces are increasingly acting in concert to burn mosques, confiscate property, and assault families.

The Carter Center reports that settler violence has become the primary cause of Palestinian injuries in the territory. Displacement figures have spiked, with more than 3,200 Palestinians forced from their homes this year—a rate double that of the previous three-year average. International observers are now calling for urgent diplomatic and legal intervention to enforce accountability.

Simultaneously, the Israeli government is accelerating its settlement program. The Higher Planning Council recently moved to authorize over 1,200 new housing units across four settlements. This addition brings the 2024 total to more than 8,000 units, building on an unprecedented 28,000 approvals granted last year. The advocacy group Peace Now notes that the government has streamlined this process by removing the requirement for defense minister sign-offs, effectively normalizing weekly approvals to bypass international scrutiny.
