Google Search Shifts Toward AI-Generated Summaries

This shift is detailed in a 2026 Generative AI Landscape report by Similarweb, which highlights how Google’s AI Mode—a conversational tool that decomposes complex questions into related subtopics—has seen its usage surge. Monthly visits to the service jumped from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026. This evolution in search behavior is reflected in a 5.4% increase in average query length, as users treat the search engine more like an AI assistant than a directory.

While Google expands its AI footprint, the broader generative AI market—including services like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude—has seen monthly visits rise to 9.5 billion. For publishers, this change creates a complex landscape regarding referral traffic. Although Google has introduced direct links and website previews to appease concerns over lost traffic, data suggests a disconnect between the sources cited in AI answers and the pages users actually visit. ChatGPT, for instance, frequently cites deep-link articles but drives the majority of its referral traffic back to main homepages.

To address these tensions, the industry is exploring new monetization models. Cloudflare has entered a private beta for a "Pay per Crawl" service, allowing website operators to charge AI crawlers for content access using HTTP 402 status codes. This move represents a growing effort to formalize the relationship between content creators and the AI systems that increasingly serve as the primary interface for web information.
