Operations at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and the Southside license bureau also ceased following emailed threats. Mayor Rob Rue characterized the communications as a hateful response to immigration, openly criticizing national politicians for misrepresenting the community’s reality.

Despite these local pleas for restraint, Senator Vance continued to circulate claims on social media regarding communicable diseases among the city's estimated 12,000 to 15,000 Haitian residents. Authorities have repeatedly debunked these assertions, as well as the viral rumors regarding the consumption of household pets. New York Times columnist Jamelle Bouie compared the campaign to historical blood libel, suggesting the intent is to drive violence through fear. President Joe Biden addressed the escalation on Friday, labeling the attacks on the Haitian community wrong and demanding an immediate cessation of the rhetoric.
