Coinbase bets on AI agents to drive crypto payment adoption

Armstrong argues that traditional financial infrastructure remains a bottleneck for machine-to-machine commerce. While conventional banking relies on human identity verification and manual approval, AI agents require programmable money that can settle transactions instantly without human intervention. Under this model, software could purchase computing power, storage, or data access on the fly, transforming crypto from a speculative asset into a functional utility layer for the internet.

The x402 payment protocol

Central to this strategy is the x402 standard, launched in May 2025. By leveraging the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code, the protocol allows APIs to request USDC payments automatically. When paired with Agentic Wallets—which allow developers to set specific spending limits—the system enables machines to operate independently. Chainalysis data indicates that Base has already surpassed 100 million x402-linked transactions since the protocol’s inception. However, early metrics are nuanced; analysts note that meme-coin speculation and automated farming scripts, rather than purely functional service purchases, have contributed significantly to this volume.

Despite the rapid transaction growth, the economic utility of these automated payments remains a company thesis rather than a settled market reality. Companies like Travala have begun testing the stack for automated hotel bookings, yet broader adoption hinges on security, service quality, and the ability of developers to manage agent behavior. Investors are now looking toward Coinbase's upcoming quarterly earnings report for further clarity on how these developer-focused products translate into tangible revenue.
